I love how you took this idea that could've been complete and utter crack (and if I'd written it, it totally would've been) and made it into this very somber story. It makes you laugh, but it also makes you take it seriously.
And there are so many things beneath the surface that I loved. Like someone already mentioned - the theme of identity. Morality. Personal responsibility. The balancing of what you're expected and what you need to do versus what you dream about and what you want. All of the things that make the superhero trope so classically loved and repeated. Move over, Stan Lee, seriously. (Well, he's retired, so I guess he did. But he is somehow more famous now than ever before so I don't even know how that works.) But all of those things that make superhero movies and books so amazing - they were all present, and wonderfully so. (The hostage was reading a comic book. And had gambling debts. Guh.)
But seriously, mad props, I don't even know what else to say. I love your writing because it's so deliberate and thoughtful, funny but always very serious and mature at the same time. And this, like everything else you write, was pitch perfect. The respect you showed for the characters, the subject matter - hell even Idol itself (Paula so would vote for everybody! And nobody talks about Alexis or Jasmine! Or the 17 Again premiere!) was just awesome.
ETA: Haha, forgot the original feedback I had when I hit comment in the first place. I love, love, love how you wove these alternate explanations into the story, allowing the reader to choose which one to take away from it. Was it Danny with the ice? Or Allison, or Lil, or maybe just some random audience member? Was The Shade wiped just like everyone else? Do they stay with the league? The unanswered questions about Megan? Plus the open ending - just really, really great storytelling. Bravo.
