I'm so glad you're enjoying it! :DD Jared means to say that he is a sadist, yes, but the error is on his part. :) It was meant to reflect similar moments in the original book during Heidi's early education (though obviously without the S&M!) just as a little wink to the source, though rereading it now that's definitely not evident without that context.
