Update and fic

I am here. I am carrying on. :)

Justified is back! And inspired me to go back and rewatch season 1 forward whilst working on other things. It got me thinking that it really is a very particular thing, moving back to a rural hometown that you never really intended to see again. That's not what the show is about, but then it sort of is in a way, and now that I've been back in my own rural, small-town hometown for a couple of years now that's resonating, especially juxtaposed against season 5. You don't intend to stay, but a couple of years down the road, somehow you're still there and so entangled in everything again that it's hard to pick up and go, and everything's a whole lot more complicated than it was ever supposed to be.

I quietly posted a story to AO3 earlier this week that's actually on a similar theme, in a way. I'm usually a pretty fast writer, but this is a story that revealed itself slowly, in bits and pieces and through several revisions. I started it almost eight years ago, and had a complete first draft at least three years ago, but it took a long time to get it to say just exactly what I wanted it to say. No story is ever perfect, so eventually you just have to stop and call it finished, but I think I finally got this one to where I always wanted it to be.

FIC: five MCU stories for kink bingo

I seem to actually be doing my bingos on themes this year, which is something I always intend to do and rarely manage.

These five all ended up being explorations of the relationship between bodies and identity through solo kink: Steve explores the limits of a body he wasn't born into; Tony recognizes the nature of his engagement with the world around him; Natasha expresses ownership of her own body; Clint reclaims his own self-determination through his closest relationship; Bruce finds ways to circumvent the limitations of his bodily transformation; and Thor confronts his ongoing position as mythic in this world. I think some are more successful than others, but overall I'm really happy with how they turned out.

Mutually Assured Satisfaction (5000 words)

Tony isn't so much introducing Steve to twenty-first century sex as enabling him. Steve already knows what he wants.

This is only available for Bruce to enjoy when conditions are exactly right. He has to be alone, to maintain control of the situation. He has to be too exhausted to turn back into the Hulk again. It's now or never, till the next change rolls around.

Thor discovers the legacy he and his kind have left behind on Earth, and grapples with his relationship to that legacy now, as well as the ways that coming face to face with representations of his other self make him feel.

There are very few people in this world that Clint Barton trusts, and he's not even sure he's one of them anymore. Hell, he's never been orthodox before, so why even worry that he's not going for normal ways of reconnecting with himself.

FIC: Guided by the Beauty of Our Weapons (Elementary gen)

The beauty of going in to work at 7 a.m. (unnecessarily, as it turned out) is that I managed to finish everything I needed to get done by noon. Of course, the downside is I now need a nap.

I participated in

bigbang_mixup again this year, and as is my apparent tradition arrived at the eleventh hour and suddenly thought "You know what? This would be so much better if I ______!" and ended up frantically rewriting up to the last minute. But it is up! This was inspired by

suchaprince's mix, and I know there's some discussion on the subject but I believe there's a real art to putting together a narrative or thematic mix and I'm really pleased this challenge exists and that I had such an inspiring mix to work from.

Even for Holmes and Watson, some of the most important things in their lives take place in between cases, and adjusting to the new status quo is going to take some work on both sides.

FIC: four MCU stories

My tomato is ripe! Which sounds like a euphemism but this time is absolutely literal. I don't actually have a garden so I put a bunch of herb pots out on my deck and then sneaked a couple of plants in between the lilies by the back walk (I'm renting the house so the gardens are about 80% not my choice), which means I have exactly one full-size tomato plant and it has one large tomato on it (and a few smaller ones) and today it is ripe and after work I am going to go home and eat it. Never in my life have I been so excited about a tomato.

So I said I was going to link to the stories I've written lately and here I am, doing it! There are a couple missing, because they are part of an almost-finished bingo that I'll post on its own when it's done, but otherwise I think this catches me up to last night:

Bucky knows Steve too well to let him get away with depriving himself, but it turns out there are some things he didn't know at all.

I feel like it's a perfect storm of kink for me right now, between it being summer (which always brings kink bingo) and writing in a new fandom, which draws me to kink memes as I sort out my feelings about how I want to write characters. I swear I don't always write to prompts, it just seems that way right now. ;) Plus, they tend to be shorter, which means they're finished sooner than the several longer stories I have started right now.

I've been meaning to make some sort of a catch up post for ages, but first work took over my life again, and then I got so horribly sick that I've been mostly off work since last week (I say mostly because there were still some things that had to get done, no matter what). Wheel in the Sky
AI RPF/Star Trek: Voyager fusion. Adam/Kris. 21,500 words. PG-13.

It was supposed to be a short-term pursuit into the Badlands. It turned into a 70,000-light-year journey home.

Ensign Allen wasn't that long out of Starfleet Academy, the USS Voyager only his second posting. Crewman Lambert had been fighting with the Maquis since the Federation had abandoned his home planet, and serving aboard the Val Jean for as long as anyone. When the two crews were thrown together by circumstances, with a seventy-year journey home ahead of them, they both had to learn a whole new set of rules. They all did.

Almost two years on, the reality of the situation has set in—home really isn't just around the corner, and people's life decisions are starting to reflect that. Unlikely friends from early on in the journey, coming to terms with that reality helps transform Kris and Adam into something more. But out in the far flung reaches of space, it's never as easy as that.
