day the somethingth

I am in the deepest denial about the fact that I have just one more day off before I go back to work. It's the longest I've had off at a stretch since I started this job, and it's been lovely but I was also sick for more than half of it, plus holiday plans, so it doesn't feel that long.

We're now into that part of the work cycle where I have to hope and pray that people now attend the events and sign up for the classes that we've been planning, because a) I want them to be successful, generally, and b) I dread having to cancel things and deal with performers/artists/instructors to do so. We've also got a couple of gallery shows that are more tenuous that I'd like, and I've just remembered that I need to find someone to construct some temporary framework in the gallery for the clay tile show, but that's not till February.

I am trying very hard not to think about this until after my vacation is actually over. I have not been successful so far. I've gone in to work twice over the holidays, and checked my email almost daily.

I did absolutely no writing today, but I did finally get some more Yuletide reading done. This tonight, and probably one last one tomorrow night.

9 recs in Candle Cove, Closing Time - Leonard Cohen, Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern, Holmes on Homes RPF / Cthulhu Mythos - HP Lovecraft, Anne of Green Gables - LM Montgomery, Archer, The Secret Garden/A Little Princess and Love Actually:

Between 'Outerscope' and the Sleestaks [ Candle Cove ]
I'm pretty sure that anyone who knows Candle Cove has already read this, but if you're curious and don't know the (short) canon, this story links to the original story. That said, I'm pretty sure it's going to give me actual nightmares tonight.

the winds of change and the weeds of sex [ Closing Time - Leonard Cohen (Song) ]
First of all, I love this interpretation of the song, and also, just...the late 90s are the time I wish I had back the most and this is so completely true to my experiences, in a lot of ways.

Beside the Lions and the Ladies [ Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern ]
Bailey, Poppet and Widget after the novel. I feel like this slots so comfortably into how I see them, but in that moment and in their near future, and I love the little details of the circus that feel so much like the book.

The Circus Life of Bailey Alden Clarke, Proprietor [ Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern ]
I have no explanation for why I burst into tears at the end of this. It just made me feel so much.

Strange Geometry [ Holmes on Homes RPF / H.P. Lovecraft - Cthulhu Mythos ]
There is something just so oddly charming about this story. Especially for a Lovecraft crossover.

Roll in the Burlington [ Anne of Green Gables - L. M. Montgomery ]
What happens to Katherine Brooke when she doesn't, in fact, go to Egypt. I just love this for all kinds of reasons, for the characterisation and for the performance aspects and for queering the text in unexpected ways. Just wonderful.

Goldenfist [ Archer, multiple pairings, adult ]
Just your basic group Fuck or Die scenario, Archer-style. So very many quotable moments, but Pam and Cheryl are the best. The best.

Prakriti [ The Secret Garden / A Little Princess ]
Mary Lennox and Sara Crewe in wartime. There's something both lovely and raw about this story, and about them.

Down At Your Door [ Love Actually, Billy Mack/Joe ]
There's just something so honest and genuine and unsentimental about this, which given the canon is very refreshing.
