day the third

I love Yuletide, you guys. I do. There are so many stories that you'd just never see any other time of the year, because there's such a small audience for them or because people would just never think to write them. It's the greatest source of holiday joy for me. And so I wanted to say, since I'm actually doing recs this year, that there are a lot of exceptional stories in the Yuletide archive, and these recs are definitely not the sum total of everything I enjoyed. Really, it's more of a list of the stories that I really connected with.

Also, I love the kudos button on AO3. There's definitely no qualitative difference between my choice to use it or to write a comment; sometimes I have something specific to say or ask, and sometimes I just want to say "Hey, I really liked this!" And it is extremely useful when it's 3 am and I've just read something awesome and I'm thinking "I can't even string three words together right now, I'll just come back later" (but then never do).

One day I'll actually post these before I go to bed instead of crashing and posting them in the morning.

READ THIS ONE FIRST [Monty Python RPF] (And then this one.)
With an imperative title like that, how can you not? This is a work of staggering genius and must be read by everyone at once. I want to taste the brain of someone who came up with something this complex and this haunting and this python-esque, that you can pull apart and put back together and get a different story. Honesty, I'm almost at a loss how to even adequately talk about it.

Blood, Steel, Skin [Rubicon]
A sharp and insightful look at Kale Ingram, and how he became who he is. Really, really well done.

A Lesson in Uselessness [Alice in Wonderland/Beauty and the Beast]
A perfect Alice in a new kind of a wonderland. Honestly, voices like hers are hard to nail and this one is dead on.

Wrap Around Your Dreams [Sleeping Beauty]
I love the worldbuilding in this one, and there's just something...well, for lack of a better word, enchanting about this tale of Philippa and Aurora.

Love Like a Cannonball [Sky High]
Warren/Will. This story does what I really love superhero stories to do: meditates on the cost of being a hero. And I especially love it when someone can combine that kind of perceptiveness with great characterization and character growth and relationships.

Give Us Those Nice Bright Colours [Warehouse 13]
Myka/Helena. I left Warehouse 13 this season desperately wanting to see more of Myka and H.G. working together, and this story gives me that without forgetting just what happened between them.
