That was so, so wonderful! I've never seen the movie, but I loved the book when I was younger, and this was just the perfect balance of it and something new and modern and romantic. Jared was heartbreakingly endearing. I was quite traumatised at not being able to hug him, especially in earlier chapters. His attitude was the perfect modern day version of the cheerful goodness that Heidi had, if that makes any sense. Less religious piety and excessive naivite to dress it up, but still at the core of it making the best of bad situations, and looking for the good in things, and some of that shining through for other people to eventually see. I still love Heidi because it's nostalgic, but if I read it for the first time now I'd probably be all jaded and think it was twee and sentimental, but you got the good feeling of the book without all those period trappings and I loved it all over again for the same reasons. Does that make sense? It's meant as a compliment anyway!
Jensen's story was well done and touching as well. And turning Clara's physical disability into Jensen's agoraphobia was just genius. I love how it managed to make the physical mountain a specific lure to Jensen just as it was to Clara, though as a representation of the beauty of nature he's missing inside instead of a chance to drink lots of goat's milk, but it was really Jared he needed to draw him out. And Chad as Peter was also genius. Though I'm glad Jared didn't end up with Chad. That was all Heidi fanfiction anyway!
My only complaint is that there weren't enough goats. Did goats even get one mention? I take it all back! It's not Heidi without goats!
